Where should I start with my Bible study?

I've been skipping around just reading, but I want to get more in depth with a concordance and Bible dictionary. Any suggestions?

Where should I start with my Bible study?
Word of God

2 Timothy 3:16-17

16All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17that the man of God may be perfected, thoroughly furnished to every good work.

God’s word, (The Bible), consists of 66 books written by more than 40 authors from all walks of life. It was written by Kings and fishermen, political leaders and cupbearers. It was written over a period of 1500 years, in different places and all types of situations. Daniel wrote from within a palace, Joshua while fighting, Paul while in prison, and Luke while traveling. Authors writing in different time, places, and living in vastly different lifestyles. The Bible is not a book written by authors who sat down as a group and carefully planned the sequences of the story. It is a book that contains books of history, law, prophecy, poetry, proverbs, and songs. And the amazing thing is, they all are tied together in the message that they bring. God orchestrated the entire book. The author of each book of the Bible was inspired by God for His purpose. To communicate his message through as many types of people, using different styles of writing, so He could reach a more diverse population.

Through His miraculous design His word has survived longer than any of the great writings in history. Weather could not destroy it. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947 is proof of this. Nations tried to destroy it. Persecution of Christian believers over centuries from Rome was unable to destroy the message.

Why such meticulous care? Because Gods word contains divine truth necessary for life and godliness. For rebuking for wrong behavior. For correction of something to its proper condition, and instructing in Godly behavior. Not just for the “man of God” but for each and every one of us.

Hebrews 4:12-13

12 For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of thoughts and intent of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight, but all things are naked and opened to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

Even though Gods word can be comforting to a believer, His word is also a tool of judgment for those who have not made a commitment to follow Him. God’s word is just as relevant and valuable as when it was written years ago. Just as a surgeon’s scalpel is so finely sharpened to be able to cut deep into a person and excise a cancerous tumor, Gods word can cut into the soul of man and cut out the sin within. And with God there is nothing in the soul of man that cannot be seen by Him. Nothing can be hidden from Him, just as the surgeon can expertly go in and remove the cancer, Gods skillful word can determine right from wrong, and then remove the deadly tumor (sin) from our souls.

2 Peter 1:20-21

20 knowing this first, that no prophesy of the Scripture came into being of its own private interpretation. 21 For prophecy was not borne at any time by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke being borne along by the Holy Spirit.

The first thing that God wants us know is the fact that Scripture did not get its origin from man. That His Holy Word came from Him and not through any human interpretation. Even though through the years there has been many people who have claimed to interpret Gods word, it was inspired by God, given to holy men, being led by the Holy Spirit. Throughout scripture, we are warned to be careful of false teachers, and false doctrines. There are many different denominations and many different interpretations of Gods word in today society. But there is only one Holy Spirit that inspired the writing of Gods true word. Through the fulfillment of prophesy we can be sure that we are reading the true word of God.

John 8:31-32

31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who believed on Him, If you abide in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

The first step in becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ, is to believe or have faith in Him as the Messiah, and the Son of God. What is a disciple? A disciple or apostle is a follower of Jesus Christ. The English word apostle comes from the Greek word apostolos, which means a messenger, envoy or ambassador, and this is related to the verb, “to send” as one who is sent on behalf of another. So to be a disciple of Christ we are acting as His messenger, or ambassador to deliver His message. So, that brings us to the second step towards becoming a disciple of Christ. We must continually abide in in Jesus’ word. A disciple habitually shows his faith in Jesus by adopting Gods word as his own, obeying His word and practicing what Jesus teaches. Disciples are both learners and followers of Jesus Christ.

Jesus makes us a promise in this verse. That by believing in Him and following His word, we will “know the truth” and it “shall make us free”. Not only by continually abiding in His word will we know that He is the truth, but that truth (His teachings) will free us from sin. We must be sincere about our beliefs, and an intellectual belief is not enough. Everyone must sincerely hold on to and follow the teachings of Jesus. But sincerity does not always equal truth. People can be very sincere about their beliefs, but they can be sincerely wrong.

Matthew 15:1-9

1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the Law came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked him, 2 “Why is it that your disciples disobey the teaching handed down by our ancestors? They don’t wash their hands in the proper way before they eat!” 3 Jesus answered, “And why do you disobey God’s command and follow your own teaching? 4 For God said, ‘Respect your father and your mother,’ and ‘If you curse your father or your mother, you are to be put to death.’ 5 But you teach that if people have something they could use to help their father or mother, but say, ‘This belongs to God,’ 6 they do not need to honor their father. In this way you disregard God’s command, on order to follow your own teaching. 7 You hypocrites! How right Isaiah was when he prophesied about you! 8 ‘These people, says God, honor me with their words, but their heart is really far from me. 9 It is no use for them to worship me, because they teach human rules as though they were my laws!’ “

The Pharisees and teachers of the law came from Jerusalem, the enter of Jewish authority to scrutinize Jesus’ activities. Over the centuries since the Jews had returned from Babylonian captivity, hundreds of traditions had been added to Gods law. The Pharisees and teachers of the law considered their traditions to be equal to Gods laws. Many traditions are not bad in themselves. Some religious traditions even add richness or more meaning to life. But we can’t assume that because these traditions have been followed for many years that they based on Gods Word.

1 Timothy 4:16

16 Hold on to yourself and to the doctrine; continue in them, for doing this you shall both save yourself and those who hear you.

Our doctrine is what we believe in, and in this case to be a disciple of Christ, what we believe in is Jesus Christ. Believe in Him is such a way as we follow His teachings, and conduct our lives in such a manor as to reflect this. Which is more important, life or doctrine? Neither, it’s like an airplane with only one wing, it can’t fly. Our life and doctrine are should be the same way, inseparable. It’s important to learn and to teach and to live the right doctrine, to save ourselves as well as those who hear us, and witness the way we live our lives.

Gods principles never change, and his law doesn’t need additions. Traditions should help us understand Gods law better, not become laws themselves.

Acts 17:10-11

10 And the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. They, when they arrived, went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 And these were more noble than those of Thessalonica, in that they received the Word with all readiness of mind and searched the Scriptures daily to see if those things were so.

“With all readiness”, meaning with an open mind and with all eagerness to search the scriptures so as not to be fooled or led astray by false doctrines, false teaching, or false religious leaders. This is our challenge: to read and study the Bible everyday.

John 12:48

48 He who rejects Me and does not receive My Words has one who judges him; the Word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

Why study the Bible? Why study Gods Word? Because some day we will be judged by that very word. God has set the standard for living life. His Word speaks into all areas of life. We are going to be judged by His Word, and the only way that we will know what it says is to study it daily. Knowing this fact here is a question that we must ask ourselves; Will I live by the Bible or my feeling, traditions, needs, etc.?
Reply:I have two more studies if you like I can send them also. Report Abuse

Reply:I'd say start from the beginning, and just go along !
Reply:Depends wghere you are at?

Have you received the Spirit ? (Acts 2:4, 33, 39)

If not start there.
Reply:Find a study on the book of Romans. I've been in a ladies bible study for ten years. We take one book of the bible and study it, with lessons, over an 8 month period. In all those years, I think the most life changing, incredible book was Romans.

God bless you!
Reply:I would suggest the gospel of John or maybe Matthew. Good luck.
Reply:This is what you do. I am catholic and I first started when I was a small kid. If you are older it's the same thing. If you want to study on your own, make sure you get a catechism book from a catholic church. Go home and study that. It's not that long. After that go to the church again and ask them if you can join a class about what you just read. There is a lot of rituals, such as what to do in mass. You have to know your prayers and you have got to do these things before you can get your first communion (where you can get the bread when your at mass.) I belive you have to become a member of that church(by giving at least $5 as a gift to the church to join). Then your on your way to bible study until you get your confirmation. It's a lengthly process. Just study the catechism book, if anything.
Reply:When I first got saved, someone suggested I read the Gospel of John, then just continue straight through to the end of the New Testament. Then, go back to the beginning of the New Testament, ( The Gospel of Matthew) and read the whole thing through again. Then, start in Genesis, and read the whole Bible through. That's what I did.
Reply:The Psalms are always good because they cover everything...worship, praise, sorrow, repentance. You can find a Psalm for most anything. Read one a day and pray on it and hide it in your heart. You will always learn something. God bless.
Reply:John. It talks about the Divinity of Jesus as the Christ. Then Romans....it's hard but Paul talks about how to live the Christian Life.

Blessings.
Reply:Do a nice thing to yourself and read something else.

Just anything.

You'll feel less angered.
Reply:Let G-d lead you.
Reply:Start with the New Testament.
Reply:The teacher, or course leader is important.

Find a course of moderation, not extreme. Look around, check with others that have a good or better class, and avoid the ones where many people leave quickly.
Reply:Yes, the New Testament. The whole Bible applies of course, but the NT applies to the covenant we have today
Reply:Genesis
Reply:I would start with John.in the NT. There's Matt., Mark, Luke, and John. All four books are very interesting and very informative. Go to a used book store if you have one in your area or garage sales and you can get a Bible dictionary and a concordance. I use the Strongs and the Commentary is good also. Good luck an your journey into Gods' Word. It will be an eye opener and great help to you. Pray and ask for guidence
Reply:Start at the beginning. Just remember to pray first and the rest will fall into place
Reply:Start with the New Testament.
Reply:Yes I would suggest you read Ezekiel, chapter 4, verses 12 through 15. To really get a grasp of what was happening you should read completely chapters 4 and 5 of Ezekiel. For God so loved Ezekiel that he had a change of heart and allowed Ezekiel to cook his meals over a fire fueled by cow dung rather than the human dung that was originally specified by God. You may decide to read the bible for amusement purposes rather than spiritual guidance after reading these verses. Episodes like this are seldom if ever mentioned by preachers during church services. If you decide to read the entire bible then I suggest you take notes of the things you find particularly amusing or even immoral so that you will be able go back and find it in the bible. Reading the bible can be fun and entertaining. You can keep your Christian friend`s bowels in an uproar by quoting scripture that is a little off the beaten path and causes a little hesitant stuttering when they explain the true meaning (which they will always find for you) of the scripture you quoted. Have fun.
Reply:Matthew is a good place to start.
Reply:There are lots of different study guides you can buy at Lifeway. Beth Moore has a couple of really good ones. I suggest buying a book to guide you through it, the questions and answers are really in depth and informative.
Reply:i suggest you understand the bible first before you start reading.

its a book full of stories INSIPIRED some guy who said to be God's son.

its a book written by men ...remember not much entertainment back then..so STORIES had to written.

but read genesis 19 verse 30..that stuff is not right.
Reply:Why not begin at the beginning? Genesis is the first book and it's also the coolest. It has the Creation, Adam %26amp; Eve, the Tower of Babel, Noah's Flood etc. Exodus is pretty cool too. It has the stuff about Moses and Pharaoh and the Jews walking in circles for 40 years. You can skip the book of Numbers though. It's boring enough to stop your heart.
Reply:I would strongly advise you to start with the life of Jesus.

You can find it in the Gospels in the Bible, that is to say either:

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Good reading :)
Reply:Start with Micah 6.6-8.

Then begin in either Matthew or Genesis. The NT completes the revelation begun in Genesis, and a reading of the Bible from the beginning would be beneficial if read for the purpose of trying to find out what God is really after.

Don't let the boredom, repetition, and "too weird" stories stymie your progress. Keep reading and see what God wants to do through you.
Reply:buy a daily bible study book.. they usually have passages and a theme for each day
Reply:The Bible.
Reply:If you have been skipping around chances are you have a favorite book. The one that attracted and held my attention so many years ago was "James".

I digested mentally what James had to say and then John, Paul, and Peter.

Now, my study pattern is at least two chapters of the old testament and two chapters of the new testament in the King James Version per day, needless to say that is a lot and sometimes I don't get it all done. I find that the old explains the new better if I read both, one following the other.

Acquiring a dictionary of Hebrew , Greek, and Latin is a plus too! I use "Where To Find It In The Bible" published by "Nelson"

I hope this will be of some assistance.
Reply:The book of Psalms is great. You learn about what God wants and you Praise him at the same time. Praise God!
Reply:I would start with Luke and then read Acts. Luke wrote both the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. That takes you from Jesus walking the shores of Galile to Jesus working through the apostles.
