Book/Bible study recommendations for college age?

basicly it's almost summer (only 2 more days of finals between me and summer break) but i am a Christian college age girl and i want to know what books or bible studies anyone else would recommend someone my age to read, i'd like to get a lot of reading in over the summer and also grow in my faith and use my mind to study God, church history, etc...

Book/Bible study recommendations for college age?
Well John MacArthur came out with a good book recently called "The Truth War." Anything by Ray Comfort is good, especially "The Way of the Master", "Hell's Best Kept Secret", and "How to Win Souls and Influence People". You can get book by Ray Comfort at http://www.livingwaters.com or you can have a book store to order them, like Barnes n' Noble. Not Borders though cuz they for some odd reason can't get them. Also anything by Charles Spurgeon like "All of Grace" is good, as well as other famous writers from the past like John Wesley, George Whitfield and the like. And if your looking for a nice little program to do, that will educate you like you wouldn't believe, focusing on the realm of evangelism you can go to http://www.biblicalevangelism.com and take the online course. I hope that helps ya out.
Reply:It your looking fro a fun book I'm reading "Body Piercing Saved My Life: Inside the Phenomenon of Christian Rock" by Andrew Beaujon. I don't think he's a christian either but I've found it very interesting.

As a writer and continuing student of the Word I would highly recommend a KJV Bullinger Companion Bible. I would also encourage you to do a "google" on E.W. Bullinger to find out who and what he wrote. He also wrote some amazing article on the constellations and how our Heavenly Father placed them in the sky as a witness to his Word. It has absolutely nothing to do with astrology (occult) and everything to do with the astronomical evidence of God's awesome plan. Then there are some very interesting books written by a professor of anthropology by the name of E. Raymond Capt. One book I just finished a short time ago was the Traditions of Glastonbury where I had some pertinent questions about Jesus' life before his ministry began and his relationship with Joseph of Arimathea. Have a great summer and God Bless!

Reply:I don't know if you'd like it, but Asimov's Guide to the Bible by Isaac Asimov is good (I never finished reading it because I didn't get time before I had to return it to the library). Keep in mind that he was an Atheist and a very intelligent man, so he looks at the bible in a very scientific and historical way. If you can handle that, than its a good book from what I've read.

There are Many Topics, but probably none more asked about Here than "End Times" which is Much More than the Book of Revelation!!! What ever U decide, be Sure that Both are on the Same Page!!! That is to say, able to have Access to the same Materials to "Draw" from. Bible Handbooks / Commentaries are Very Helpful. Be a "Good Partner" and when U "Meet", be "Prepared" having done Ur "Homework". Un-doubtably there will Arise Questions that U may Not Know. Great! There is no Shame in this, so Dig it out between U!!! Start each session with Prayer for Guidance from the H.S.. Have Fun!!! John
Reply:well it depends on the person your giving the bible study to. Is this person saved, or is he/she not saved?

if saved then you could start from the book of romans which is a great book of faith.. teach on having faith in God and how he will provied if we believe in him and put our trust in him that everything will be all right.

but if not saved then you could teach on salvation. You could teach from the book of acts when peter was teaching on the day of pentecost and God's spirit fell down upon them all.

or you could read from a number of passages bringing them to rom 5:12-21 showing how we are sin natured and we are in need of a God to fogive us and wash away our sins. then bring them to the cross where christ actually did just that for us and died...then rose again.

and how the gift of God is eternal life...not on earth but in heaven..

hope this can help you out some... good luck

Can you give me some suggestions for leading a bible study and read bible?

The canon of the Old Testament that Catholics use is based on the text used by Alexandrian Jews, a version known as the "Septuagint" and which came into being around 280 B.C. as a translation of then existing texts from Hebrew into Greek by 72 Jewish scribes (the Torah was translated first, around 300 B.C., and the rest of Tanach was translated afterward).

The Septuagint is the Old Testament referred to in the Didache or "Doctrine of the Apostles" (first century Christian writings) and by Origen, Irenaeus of Lyons, Hippolytus, Tertullian, Cyprian of Carthage, Justin Martyr, St. Augustine and the vast majority of early Christians who referenced Scripture in their writings. The Epistle of Pope Clement, written in the first century, refers to the Books Ecclesiasticus and Wisdom, analyzed the book of Judith, and quotes sections of the book of Esther that were removed from Protestant Bibles.

In the 16th c., Luther, reacting to serious abuses and clerical corruption in the Latin Church, to his own heretical theological vision (see articles on sola scriptura and sola fide), and, frankly, to his own inner demons, removed those books from the canon that lent support to orthodox doctrine, relegating them to an appendix. Removed in this way were books that supported such things as prayers for the dead (Tobit 12:12; 2 Maccabees 12:39-45), Purgatory (Wisdom 3:1-7), intercession of dead saints (2 Maccabees 15:14), and intercession of angels as intermediaries (Tobit 12:12-15). Ultimately, the "Reformers" decided to ignore the canon determined by the Christian Councils of Hippo and Carthage.

The Latin Church in no way ignored the post-Temple rabbincal texts. Some Old Testament translations of the canon used by the Latin Church were also based in part on rabbinical translations, for example St. Jerome's 5th c. Latin translation of the Bible called the Vulgate.

The "Masoretic texts" refers to translations of the Old Testament made by rabbis between the 6th and 10th centuries; the phrase doesn't refer to ancient texts in the Hebrew language. Some people think that the Masoretic texts are the "original texts" and that, simply because they are in Hebrew, they are superior.

Some Protestants claim that the "Apocrypha" are not quoted in the New Testament so, therefore, they are not canonical.

Going by that standard of proof, we'd have to throw out Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Lamentations, Obadiah, Nahum, and Zephaniah because none of these Old Testament Books are quoted in the New Testament.

But there is a bigger lesson in all this confusion over not only the canon but proper translation of the canon , especially considering that even within the Catholic Church there have been differing opinions by individual theologians about the proper place of the deuterocanonicals (not that an individual theologian's opinions count for Magisterial teaching!).

The lesson, though, is this: relying on the "Bible alone" is a bad idea; we are not to rely solely on Sacred Scripture to understand Christ's message. While Scripture is "given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16-17), it is not sufficient for reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness.

It is the Church that is the "pillar and ground of Truth" (1 Timothy 3:15)!

Jesus did not come to write a book; He came to redeem us, and He founded a Sacramental Church through His apostles to show us the way.

It is to them, to the Church Fathers, to the Sacred Deposit of Faith, to the living Church that is guided by the Holy Spirit, and to Scripture that we must prayerfully look.

Can you give me some suggestions for leading a bible study and read bible?
This is what I do so hopefully I can help you:

First, you must decide what you are going to do.

A) Study through an entire book of Scripture......or

B) Study through a specific theme or topic

There are plenty of wonderful resourses out there to help you along in leading one of these. The most important thing to remember is this:

Pray about it first......and don't feel pressured when you don't have all the answers......because no one does. Not even Bible scholars.

Any other questions....feel free to e-mail me.

Reply:Get a good concordance. Take a subject. Look up every scripture about that subject and read it in context. Then teach the subject. It is very rewarding to do this. It gives you a more complete understand of different subjects in the Bible.

Use several of the good translations (ones translated since the 1960's by translators and not by a single group or person.) Some good ones are New International Version, Today's New International Version, The New American Standard, New King James, New Revised and a number more.
Reply:Yes, if you are Christian, I would suggest that you focus on the words of Jesus Christ. Please pay attention to what Jesus said about the "Word of God."

Seek out the original meaning of that phrase... not the popular notion we hear these days. The New Testament did not even exist when he used that term.
Reply:Make certain of doing it first, whether you should.

If you should, narrow the focus to either a book, doctrine, topic, biography, etc.

Know your material well.

Encourage the students to attempt to find the answers for themselves...a major part of teaching is NOT just the transfer of facts, but teaching how to FIND them.

Reply:I'm a Christian and an educator so my advice will be rather different from others. If you've never led a Bible Study before, I recommend you lead by teaching a study authored from a reliable source. Find these items through your church or a Christian Bookstore. Many studies do not require materials but other will so you'll need to look into that and make the decision that is best for the group you're leading. I know it is tempting to read the BIBLE and use a Concordance or Chain Reference to interpret scriptures but putting together good teaching materials is actually an involved process. Using published materials while you learn how to make your own will assure you avoid teaching in error. Be Blessed in your efforts at teaching biblical truth!
Reply:there are lots of categories to use in the Jesus Person Pocket Promise book....get one today....also good is the new revised standard Life applicat Bible...tons of footnotes...
Reply:I’d suggest reading and rereading a passage or a book to get the gist of the message and the context. Familiarity with the text is vital. Another a good procedure is to read through the Bible once a year to continue to familiarize yourself with its total message. Another help is to have a study Bible.

As you read the Bible, pay special attention to the context and the argument of the writer. Ask and answer questions like: Who is writing? To whom is he writing? Why is he writing? Is there a problem he is addressing? What is the purpose and theme of the book? You can ask this last question of every paragraph and chapter as well as for the whole book. Another help is to read a commentary and a survey to get the overall view of the book you are studying.

Hope this helps.
Reply:I would advise starting from the beginning and reading every passage and asking what it means. so many bible classes only look at the lovey dovey stuff. You need to read the whole thing to appreciate it.

If you just want a few good passages then try these out for starters

And my personal favourite:

Genesis 19:30-38
Reply:begin with the main topic of the bible: God´s kingdom , show him how God will set a kingdom in earth like he said in Daniel 2:44 and what will be the condition of the earth after Armageddon you can read it in Isaiah 35:5-6 Psalm 72:16, Psalms 37:9-10, also Revelation 21:3-4.

Should teaching the scientific method in schools be replaced with a course in Bible study?

No, but if current White House administration and the conservatives backing him have their way it might happen.

Should teaching the scientific method in schools be replaced with a course in Bible study?
No save that for mythology class.
Reply:How about Qur'an study, or Dhammapada study, or Veda study? Still in the mood to replace science with religion?
Reply:Nope and they've already succeeded to some extent in Kansas. They've voted to have ID taught in their schools.
Reply:No---they each have their own values and merits and do complement each other....there's lots of scientific knowledge in the Bible and many great scientists in the past like Kepler, Galileo, Newton, Pascal, Pasteur and others were inspired to explore insights from the Bible. Early American schools were instituted to enable people to read their Bibles.
Reply:too early for that
Reply:LOL. I would then start agreeing with the paranoid, last dayers...the world would definitely be going to hell in a handbasket.

Oh, and I would be moving immediately to Canada.
Reply:Church and home are the place for bible study.
Reply:HELL NO!!!
Reply:A discovery in mistranslation of scripture in the Bible will lead to teaching God's new scientific course in evolution right out of Genesis and will prove over time Charles Darwin's version of evolution wrong just as the germ theory proved the spontaneous generation theory wrong in science classes in both public and private schools.
Reply:I don't think scientific method is really taught at all, except maybe as a minor add-on to a science course.

I've love to see some kind of foundation in rational thought taught - something including logical fallacies and the scientific method. I think it would really change the world if it was taught and understood.
Reply:Do you even know what the Scientific Method is? Let me help you, it is a "The scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses". You can use the scientist method on research, yes even on the study of religion and faith.

Jeez, I thought atheist were suppose to be smart but this is a dumb question. Try again.
Reply:That is silly. Should music be replaced with French..Two different subjects. I love both. You don't replace math with English..They are all part of the knowledge you need to be a well educated person.
Reply:Any study requires someone with accurate knowledge.

Since there is so much we disagree on, from where would you qualify a teacher?

I agree with another of the answers. Bible study belongs in the home primarily and church as an alternative, though less accurate in many.
Reply:What do you think I'm gonna say?

That is so sick I almost tossed my lunch. When not busy blowing the heads off of poor defenseless leaf-eating doe-eyed creatures, holy hunters make time in their busy schedule of carnage to glean some inspiration from the Good Book. Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

I have the Life Application NLT and the NIV Study Bible. I have heard good things about Nelsons and MacArthur.

Thank you.

Looking for recommendations on a new study bible.?
you should get a strongs concordance to accompany your bible it wil give understand of every one of the words used in the Bible.
Reply:I have the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) study bible at home. It has a lot of good features to help you understand the people, places, and events in the bible and has different "tracks" which are lists of passages that are in one category such as the life and teaching of Jesus and the teachings of Paul. It also gives you a list of a suggested order to read the books in the bible if you want to read it cover to cover. The advantage of this is that instead of reading it straight through (which I did once and it was very difficult) you get a mix of different books so you don't get bored in the old testament and just give up but still read the entire bible. This version also has really good maps in the back.

Hope this helps!

Reply:I have numerous study Bibles but am finding that I am learning a great deal from the cross-references of a Bible (Classic ESV Reference Bible has loads and the NIV Study Bible you already own), a good Bible dictionary, atlas, concordance and a book on manners and customs of the Bible.
Reply:Best thing to do is go old fashioned-go to the bookstore and check out all the available versions and see which suits you best. One that I might recommend might be good for me but not you. One's Bible is the most important book they'll own. You wouldn't seriously buy the kind of car I told you to, would you? =)
Reply:Avoid MacArthur. He teaches the "Lordship salvation" false gospel. His stuff is very bad.

Maybe try the Ryrie Study Bible: http://www.hardcoverdeals.com/rel/v2_vie...

Here's also a website that teaches the meaning of every verse of every Book of the Bible: http://www.soniclight.com/constable/note...

I'd also avoid the suggestion above for the "Chuck Smith"/Word for Today study Bible. Chuck Smith teaches that you can lose your salvation, and he also teaches that pastors are to be Moses over the people, a position that is unbiblical since Moses is a picture only of Jesus and never of any pastor. Such a teaching has caused a lot of abuse over the years. It is the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which Jesus said in Revelation that He hates.

Also Smith has at times predicted the date of the rapture, and has been wrong, but some people had already sold all they had believing Smith, finding economic ruin. I'd avoid him if I were you.
Reply:Try the Holy Bible/King James with the leading of the Holy Spirit of God.

Reply:The two you have right now are really excellent. I'm in a similar place to you right now and spent a lot of time on it. Here's what I'd suggest to broaden your resources most while minimizing redundancy (ergo getting the broadest, strongest, best performance you can out of your resources....) So I'd be glad to offer some help to get the most out of your new acquisition. And you won't believe how much you can get.

First off, Nelson and MacArthur.

MacArthur study bible is a really solid product- but you can buy the MacArthur Bible Commentary for less money (albeit used, it's out of print but it's a super value on half.com at about twenty bucks) which offers twice as much content- and big quality all the way. I did that and it was one of the best ideas to ever cross me. Less redundancy also means less opportunity cost- one fewer translation you own equals one more study Bible to get! =)

Nelson is a great resource by itself but since you've already got the NIV study bible, you pretty much already have the Nelson one too. Institutional, collaborative study suites like these tend to be very well-rounded, safe, offer a lot of relevant factual scholarship, and also add a healthy amount of intimate personal commentary as well. This is awesome... but you already have it. Life Application has a stronger emphasis on personal applications of the Word but doesn't neglect facts and history by any means.

Probably the most cost-effective (if not the most effective period) choice to develop that personal side of understanding God's word and law etc is to pick up Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Bible. It's very inexpensive. Don't get the single-volume edition or a condensed one- get the unabridged. Usually it comes in six volumes -- which can be had for fifty dollars all day long or twenty if you're lucky. (A dedicated and powerful effort on the fact/history/tradition/scholarship side of things conversely would be the Ryrie study bible or any of several commentaries out there. I suggest Ryrie.)

Now then-

I'd recommend a Ryrie NASB especially with where you're at. The NASB translation and the Ryrie helps are each independently stellar, and you can get them both in the same volume for a little under twenty dollars if you order a used one from half.com. Reading through it, you would think this study Bible was written for pastors. It's full of startling surprises and astonishing breakthroughs in the Word which are all totally scriptural- mostly coming from well-developed scholarship in the precise original language, and connections which run through the entirety of scripture. Example- the two men praying in Luke 16 (?), the penitent one uses specific words in his prayer 'God have mercy on me, a sinner!' which specifically indicate that he made the offering for atonement sacrifice. (Mercy and pardon for sin apart from the price being justly paid is alien to the Bible!) A pastor told me that when he doesn't have a particular answer, he goes to Ryrie- either in the superb in-line notes or the superb topic studies- which practically always have exactly the needed answer... and make him look good haha ;) My experience with it has been fully the same. There's more in the Bible than you realize, but Ryrie found it and points it out. On that subject, the chain references in Ryrie bibles are incredible- head and shoulders above any other I own. If it's not better than Thompson's, it's really close. The chains alone and segregated articles, even apart from notes charts the best concordance i've yet found in a study bible etc, make it a real champion offering.

In whatever case, you'll be really REALLY glad if you own a Ryrie study bible or an NASB translation. They go even better together- trust me you'll be wanting to keep that pup inside the box. It's soooo good.

My (and hopefully your) second pick would be a New Spirit Filled Life Bible. Amazing quality resources in the notes etc also bring the added benefit of coming from a well-developed Assemblies of God (Charismatic/Pentacostal) perspective- extremely valuable. (Strong, well-developed commentary and theology is plentiful in older, often Calvinistic schools of thought which marginalized the Holy Spirit. These are very valuable but the scholars who developed it were raised in an atmosphere that was ill-equipped to handle the things of the Spirit from an institutional standpoint.)

Alternatively, to get that perspective on things too (which I'd recommend) the preeminent option available nowadays is the Reformation Study Bible. Read the publisher's description on Amazon to see why. It also uses the excellent ESV translation - an alternative to the excellent NRSV which sets the standard for scholarship but also compromised a couple annoying things which the ESV reclaims like gender non-neutrality - worth having anyway.

For my part I'm also jeezing up with an Old Scofield KJV -- for the translation (old spellings etc) as well as posterity (the first study bible) and its own excellent value as a study resource... and if you have wanted an amplified bible, you might as well get the Everyday Life Bible. Amplified 'study' bibles are uncommon and what few are out there would be largely redundant with what you have now -- but not Joyce's notes =)

I wouldn't really recommend Dake or Thompson Chain to be honest. You can do so much better.

Finally, you can add resources to 'go back to the original language' for FREE by downloading e-Sword (e-sword.net) with built-in Strong's (and optionally add Matthew Henry's commentary, the ESV translation, and Nave's Bible Dictionary for free.) There's a lot of other content available for it (some of it is somewhat spurious) but there's the recommendation I'd make.

Anyone know how we could get a Bible study going, and would that be permitted on Yahoo?

I think it would be a lot of fun to start a Bible study.Everyones invited, everyone a teacher and a pupil.Pick a subject.Everyone vote on that subject and go with it.Take turns with where its based at.What do you think?

Anyone know how we could get a Bible study going, and would that be permitted on Yahoo?
Yahoo Groups is the way to go... You could call it Don's Bible Study Group or whatever. Each group has its own files, photos, calendar etc, etc. You participate by email or directly thorough the Group. Everything posted goes to all members via email.

You can make it so anyone can join or you can set it up that people have to request to join. You can also assign moderators to help keep things organized.

Go to the link below to set up your group. Email me when you have it up and running.

Good Luck, Peace and Blessings
Reply:Don,

I like the idea and I would gladly participate. I do not care what topic we would begin with but I imagine that we would need to arrange for a different site to do so. There are prayer groups I believe we could form a Bible Study Group also. Have a nice evening. Get with me and we will see what we can do to set this up.

Thanks,

I would like to suggest that we answer such questions by using scriptural references to scriptural questions on such a matter. That should keep the arguing between religious groups at a minimum. Wouldn't you think??

Thanks again,

Reply:Hey Don, I really think you should be able to begin a Bible Study, However because of the majority of the people who come unto Yahoo, a good number of them would become a serious distraction to those of us who actually want to hear and know more. Last week I was given a Violation, because I mentioned a particular Christian website....So obviously someone who wasn't Christian took offense to that and turned me in! The young lady who mentioned creating your OWN Yahoo Site had a Brilliant Idea, perhaps you could do that and put up a Post to inform others that you are creating it and they are welcome to attend. I personally would truly cherish the idea. God Bless You Always, Lisa
Reply:Why don't you just study, you know current affairs, science actual relevant things...? Its no wonder you lot are still stuck in the stone age.
Reply:You might be able to start your own Yahoo Group.
Reply:If it was in Question and Answer Format, should work!!!

Ditto..........GOD Bless!!!`
Reply:You could probably email people with different bible study topics. I would like that.
Reply:I think you could do that in the chat rooms, or you could start a group with that purpose. You couldn't really do it here on Y!A unless you agree to keep it strictly to the Q%26amp;A format, though.
Reply:You guys cant be for real. Do you dorks ever get laid?
Reply:I think that is a great idea, however I don't know how to start one either.
Reply:You should be getting that within your church. The danger of what you are describing is that there are too many diverse beliefs and opinions for a consistent bible study to take place. I'm a Christian and I certainly wouldn't want to participate.

If someone offered you a bible study, what credentials would you look for in that person?

Their understanding of the scriptures? The historical knowledge? What religion they were?

How would you feel about someone that offered and then never spoke to you again about it?

How would you feel about someone who offered and then brought a bible that you didn't recognize and another book written by their religion as a study guide, and they only opened the bible for a few scriptures here and there only?

If someone offered you a bible study, what credentials would you look for in that person?
Hello,

For me:

1) Understanding the scripture

2) Have a historical of the ancient world including politics, the economies, sociology, intrigue as well as the other religions of that time.

In my opinion you really cannot have one without the other.

As for a study guide, if it helped to explain some of the scriptures and how they pertain to today's life I would not have a problem.

If someone offered and then never spoke again about it, I'd figure they were just being polite in conversation but really not interested in going through with it.

Cheers,

Michael Kelly
Reply:All of the above :)

On top of that I would look at the person's character -- if someone who didn't lead a good life offered, I would not want them 'teaching' me anything. I'd also take in to consideration their motivation -- is it out of friendship, concern, conversion...
Reply:If I were to join a Bible study, the person I was going with would have to be extremely hot. That, or we'd have to be studying it as the collection of myths and stories it is.
Reply:I recommend you read and study the Bible on your own. Start in the New Testament.
Reply:1- If they allowed me to pray 1st. YES

2- If they want to prove they are correct by using any other source than the Bible, they can only teach me lies or are in a cult.

3- If they have to come in two's and one is a novice, chances are - Mormon or Jehovah witness - both cults.

But I say bring on the study. God will show up and one may get saved. I used to put tracts on ALL their cars while they were in church learning lies.

I would not debate with them, but show them God's Love, God's Son. and His plan through the Bible. I would address mistakes in their books and see if they could explain the contradiction (without being arrogant).

In short - I would open in prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to do what He does best. Lead us into truth and bind up demonic forces in Jesus name.
Reply:The only criteria I would have is whether or not I can find something better to do with my time.

Peace to you.
Reply:1) The primary credential is the willingness to use - and base everything - on a bible. I am not adverse to bible study with anyone, credentials or not.

2) Offered and never spoke - well, *if* I refused, then I would understand if they never spoke to me of it again. An *occasional* offer (say, once or twice a year) would not go amiss, though.

3) Not using bible - I'm OK with this too. The problem here is, if anything in the "extra" book contradicts what I believe, then the "presenter" is going to find that out from me very quickly. I will ask *why* he believes the things he believes, and I will not be satisfied with "that's what we're taught", and I will make that plain. When someone tries to "sell" me on a belief contrary to one that I currently hold, I am always open to it - but it must always be confirmed by scripture, or I will most likely not adopt it. If it in any way appears contrary to scripture, then I *definitely* will not adopt it.

Jim, http://www.jimpettis.com/wheel/
Reply:Forgive me the lack of modesty but I would not have to ask or look for credentials. I would know within ten minutes how much that person understood of the Scriptures, how much historical knowledge he had, and easier than all, the religious background.
Reply:I'd want them to be a Rabbi...for sure
Reply:Credentials: same faith as you, formal biblical education, patient.

Is "Bible Study" really a true study of the bible if you are being led along a pre-concieved doctrine?

Have you ever had someone offer you to "study the bible" but what they are REALLY doing is trying to indoctrinate you according to THEIR sect's doctrine? I find that VERY decepetive! The Jehovah's Witnesses among other sects are VERY guilty of doing this.

To TRULY study something you must aproach it OBJECTIVELY right? Every sect has a slightly different approach to the bible, you have to learn them ALL. You also need to learn bible history, the REAL thing not just what that particular church wants you to know. Cause if you are being LED instead of being EMPOWERED to research on your own and then come to your own appreciation, then that is SURELY not BIBLE STUDY but just RELIGIOUS PROGRAMMING. How many of you agree?

Is "Bible Study" really a true study of the bible if you are being led along a pre-concieved doctrine?
I agree with you so for that reason I study with friends not limiting our selves to just the bible but also other Scriptures, we research different points of view.
Reply:How do you determine that anyone on this earth knows what they are talking about. You can get three scientists to agree with each other. But what if someone don't agree with them? Does this invalidate their knowledge of the facts?

If you spent 20 years in college and someone told you all your teachers had it wrong. Would you feel you had wasted your time?

Just courious.

God bless you. God loves you. Jesus died for you.
Reply:Well, if you believe that they are wrong according to the bible, and you can prove it. By all means do so. But if you try and cannot, then what? Is it from them, or from the bible? Every one needs to study for themselves, but the bible says at Matthew 18:20 For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there I am in their midst.”

Think of it this way, there is only one true God. So wouldn't there be only one true organization, that is doing the will of God the way that God wants it to be done?

Your job is to find out what one that is! Will you?

If you want to know what the bible really teaches, have your bible ready and visit http://watchtower.org , or you can contact me.

try to prove the bible wrong in ur studies. c where that gets u. u might find out there is no heaven or hell. then what would u do???

hhhhmmmmmm . . . . . .
Reply:Yes ...objectivity is important. Ask yourself... When was the Bible written??? If it was dictated by God and the Holy Spirit to the writers... in what times and ancient cultures did these script writers come from? Also, did the times these writers live in affect the words that were used... today's word usage and language is MUCH different than that of 1800 years ago... Do times change the meanings of phrases used in the Bible. Can you think of phrases used today in our every day lives that were not used 10 years ago??? Do popular phrases have different meanings today than 10 years ago??? Can you think of any phrases used in the past that are no longer used today??? When religions say we must take the meaning of the Bible literally as written... they are really asking us to live in the past in the words, customs language use, and times that were common in use 1800 to 1900 years ago. Another question... if you accept the doctrine of a religion as to how they interpret the Bible... you are letting SOMEONE ELSE study the Bible FOR YOU... and then telling you what to believe? Are you incapable of studying the Bible on your own and developing your own beliefs??? To do a good study of the Bible, you have to study ancient cultures... what was it like 2000 years ago in Israel??? What language was used??? What language was the Bible written in??? To do a Bible Study you have to know the background of life and the culture of the times of Jesus... Most of the New Testament was not even STARTED to be written until 40 to 50 years AFTER Jesus DIED!!! The gospels were written by people who did not know Jesus... he died before they wrote the gospels. Try to write a correct story that occured 40 years ago... even 4 years ago... and get every detain correct!!! It is important to consider all this... and not let someone brain wash you into what YOU SHOULD BELIEVE. Religions are good... they help us live a good life... and to be aware of God... BUT... NEVER submit yourself to a religion that demands that to be a good member... you HAVE TO BELIEVE WHAT THEY TELL YOU TO BELIEVE... and if you deviate from their beliefs... you are out of the religion.

Think kindly about the BIBLE... look for the Wisdom in its teachings... read it yourself and study it yourself... and find the universal truths contained in this holy book... as it can become holy... if you use it to make your life better. Blessings...
Reply:A bible study is what you make of it. My pastor puts it this way, This is what the bible says, and ask the Lord to write it on my heart, giving it meaning to me.
Reply:I read the bible myself to see if God's word was true, and to see what he taught on topics that were in the bible. Then i took what scripture says and found a denomination that was closest to what was in scripture. Im a Southern Baptist.

Reply:When you study in school or universtiy, are you not taught what the teacher or professor intended for you to learn from the beginning? Would you make the same accusations of them?
Reply:Is this a TRUE question or is it prec-concieved and designed to lead us to a false conclusion about bible studies? Hmmmm... think about that one.
Reply:Yeah, ANY study involves being led according to someone's views to some extent. When it comes to religion I prefer to learn by myself and with an open mind.
Reply:My cousin's wife does this kind of study. One time she said that they had to go to bible study so the pastor could tell them what to believe.

I think its really funny as she is the one who spends all her time bad-mouthing Catholics which our entire family is. We're just waiting for her oldest kid to fall for a Catholic girl and convert for her.
Reply:If you read the bible for yourself you will have the answers you need to help yourself. You will also be able to answer those who are leading/teaching you. There are no secret pages in the bible. It is available for us all to read and understand. One day you will answer to God - not the people who taught you. you won't be able to say "but so and so told be different God! "Be sure you know what the bible says for yourself. BTW - run from the JW's. Really!
Reply:I follow only the Holy Spirit...and He is the Word...and the Word says that God only reveals His secret (mystery), to His servants the Prophets (AMOS 3:7).

Jesus (The Word), said that an Elijah type Prophet would come in the Last Days and RESTORE ALL THINGS (MATT 17:11). According to MALACHI 4:5,6 - LUKE 1 - LUKE 17 - and REVELATIONS 10:7, this Prophet would forerun the 2nd Coming of Christ, and his Message would open all the mystery (secret), of God's Word...so we will not have confusion that the denominations have created.

Find out who it is by clicking here...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bibletruth...

If you are doubting this, then consider that Jesus said it would be in the Last Days, as it was in the Days of Noah.

How many people had the Truth in Noah's Day?

Jesus Christ, as the unadulterated Word of God, is our Absolute. But if you are following any interpretation than what He has given to His vindicated Prophet, you are following a lie.

There is no way around this.
Reply:Some say that the ABSOLUTE truth doesn't exist. Everything is always in some way tinted by ideology of some sort.

It doesn't have to be bad.

To decide which ones you find valuable is called having an opinion, I guess.
Reply:I agree. Many churches twist the words of the Bible to benefit themselves. Early priests in the Middle Ages times would take advantage of the people's inablity to read or write, so they would make up their own passages in order to get money from them. If the people didn't follow, then the preacher would tell them they were going to hell.

Same goes on today. "Give your money to the church or you go to hell."
Reply:To have someone lead you into a religious set of doctrine is not a Bible study. If you want to see a true approach to an effective Bible study go to %26lt;christianitybesieged.com%26gt;

Then try to have your own dialog with the Biblical authors

as was done here. You will be surprised what you find. Then share it with others.
Reply:Yes.

Reply:well they could post what they want the group to study on and give a deadline for the ansers to be in or just email one by one
Reply:I believe that any time two people decide to read the bible and share thoughts and feelings it is a great thing. The beauty of the age we live in where, friends a thousand miles apart, can connect through the Internet to discuss God's word. That in my opinion can never be wrong. It may be a little different or less personal, but by all means, what a great way to stay in touch with someone than regular sharing God's word.
Reply:I think this sounds like a good idea. If you could get a minister or teacher to help you set up a study guide, each of you could study and email or IM your views or questions to each other. This would help you learn from different points of view. It would be a good idea to have a good guidebook to work from.
Reply:i think that is a great idea maybe u need a website totally devoted im not sure how to get it started but gettin the word out is a start then settin a time and date for everyone to sign on like a chat room or something but u dont want just anyone to be able to visit it so i guess u would have to be able to delete the stupid plp that arent serious about it so i guess it could be very difficult but worth trying none the less

Also study about Adam and Eve and their talking snake.

And about god confounding the languages all over the world, in response to something happening in one specific geographic location, namely, the building of the tower of Babel. And did that stop other towers from being built?

Study the Bible, if you study it well you will become atheists.
Reply:Yeah, forsake your idiotic religion and start seeing the world for what it is.

A cold, unforgiving, cloud of gas.

Should I go to Bible Study or my Park night at my church?

My old women's Bible study ended a few weeks ago because a few of the girls moved to other countries.. now I have no Bible study and I'm sad.. I met a man who runs a small Bible study at this other church in town, and he invited me to come and I really want to go, BUT..

My own church is meeting in the park tonight.. I feel like I would be cheating on them with this other church if I didn't go..

what should I do?

Should I go to Bible Study or my Park night at my church?
Do you think your god would care?

I don't mean to be offensive, I'm serious.

What do you think your god would like you to do? Either way you are doing something in his name, correct? I think it would be fine to go to the Bible study.
Reply:I really don't think that either of these would be a bad choice. However, what I would do is this- if your own church is having a get together in the park, I would probably go to that, and then start the Bible Study next week. That is just my opinion. MY friend, it would not be cheating on your church, as you call it- if they are both true bible believing churches, there is unity in the body of Christ. It would be a personal decision, that I honestly don't think would bother God either way, but for me, if my own church was having something special I would go to that, since I am assuming the bible study is not just tonight.
Reply:Go to your own park night. THat should be fun. You never know they could be setting up a program for a new bible study.

As for the gentleman who is in another church, you can tell him what is going on. No hard feelings. I'm sure he'll understand.

JW's go door-to-door, preaching things and they are ready to take Bible study. But my Q is Whats behind this?

JW's are well known for their door-to-door preaching, and every one of them are interested to have a bible study. But whats behind this? Do they add people to their Organization or what else?

JW's go door-to-door, preaching things and they are ready to take Bible study. But my Q is Whats behind this?
Each year, Jehovah's Witnesses baptized hundreds of thousands of new Christians. Clearly, their ministry has fruitage (see 1 Cor 3:9).

A common misconception is that Jehovah's Witnesses go from door-to-door because they feel it is their duty to "recruit" a householder, or get him to "convert". In fact, Jehovah's Witnesses would go from door-to-door even if there were no hope that anyone would change their religion, or even if no one would listen to them!

That is because Jesus Christ specifically assigned the house-to-house ministry to the Christian congregation, with no regard for specific results.

(Luke 10:1,2) After these things the Lord designated seventy others and sent them forth by twos in advance of him into every city and place to which he himself was going to come. 2 Then he began to say to them: “The harvest, indeed, is great, but the workers are few. Therefore beg the Master of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.

Jehovah's Witnesses are trained to direct attention to the bible, and move on when their message is unwanted. Since each congregation in the United States tries to call at every home in its territory at least twice each year, there is strong motivation for them to move on where little interest is shown. Also, the Scriptures help the Witnesses to expect little interest from most:

(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching ...and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

We are just doing what Jesus commanded.

It's up to the person we teach, if they want to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Actually one of the requirements in becoming baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses is that you have to have the desire to want to become one. And also have a basic knowledge of the Bible.

Anyways, there's no point in forcing someone to convert to a religion. They can just leave the religion later on....so there's no point and plus it's wasting time. If you don't desire to become one then don't....your just wasting our time and yours.

There's other people who desire to become one. But if you have a change a heart, than we'll help you.

We only reach those who are interested and want to.

"Indeed, as the body without spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead." (James 2:26)

Additional Details: Contrary to what JBT has said, we do not have to do 5 hours a week. Some people have poor health or work long hours and are not able to reach those kinds of hours. This doesn't make them less than anyone else who is able to do more in the preaching work. Also, the preaching work is very effective. Worldwide there are some 6mil Bible studies being conducted.
Reply:CHRISTIANS obey the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus Christ is the one who gave the command to preach in all the world.

Jesus and his apostles did that preaching by visiting people at their homes. We find that method to still be effective today.

We don't just talk about Jesus, we obey him.
Reply:As CHRISTIANS we are commanded to “make disciples of people of all the nations,” but this does not mean that they are to use pressure or convert others by force. Jesus’ commission was to “tell good news to the meek ones,” to “bind up the brokenhearted,” to “comfort all the mourning ones.” (Matthew 28:19; Isaiah 61:1, 2; Luke 4:18, 19) We seek to do this by declaring the good news from the Bible. Like the prophet Ezekiel of old, Jehovah’s Witnesses today try to find those who “are sighing and groaning over all the detestable things that are being done.”—Ezekiel 9:4.

The best-known way we do this is by trying to find those who are distressed by present conditions is by going from house to house. So we make a positive effort to reach the public, just as Jesus did when “he went journeying from city to city and from village to village, preaching and declaring the good news of the kingdom of God.” His early disciples did likewise. (Luke 8:1; 9:1-6; 10:1-9) Today, where it is possible, we try to call at each home several times a year, seeking to converse with the householder for a few minutes on some local or world topic of interest or concern. A scripture or two may be offered for consideration, and if the householder shows interest, then we may arrange to call back at a convenient time for further discussion. Bibles and literature explaining the Bible are made available, and if the householder desires, a home Bible study is conducted free of charge. Millions of these helpful Bible studies are conducted regularly with individuals and families throughout the world.

All of our meetings are free and open to the public. No collections are ever taken. Such meetings are beneficial for all. The Bible says: “We ought to see how each of us may best arouse others to love and active

goodness, not staying away from our meetings, as some do, but rather encouraging one another, all the more because you see the Day drawing near.” Private study and research are necessary, but meeting with others is stimulating: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens the wits of another.”—Hebrews 10:24, 25; Proverbs 27:17, The New English Bible.

So we try to recommend the good news to others in this way also: by being exemplary in the Christian conduct that they recommend to others. They try to ‘do unto others as they would have others do unto them.’ (Matthew 7:12) We try to be this way with all men, not just with fellow Witnesses, friends, neighbors, or relatives. Being imperfect, we do not always succeed 100 percent. But it is the desire of their hearts to do good unto all people not only in telling them the good news of the Kingdom but also in extending a helping hand whenever possible.—James 2:14-17.
Reply:The places in the Bible where Jesus commanded this work be done by door to door means are:

Matthew 10:11And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

12And when ye come into an house, salute it.

13And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

14And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

40He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

47Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Rev. 3:19, 20

19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Jesus is not personally knocking on all doors, but he did command his followers to do it and to do it all the days until the end of the system of things. Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8......Matthew 24:14.

It doesn't make money and is beneath the dignity of most preachers to do this work. Even most of the door to door religions only ask people to do it briefly if they want to be leaders, or to get baptized or to do a specific short time of service like 2 years. For us, our service to God is all our lives.

We KNOW you cannot earn salvation. That is not why we do it. Eph. 2:8, 9 has the same content in NWT as all other Bibles.

But it is a command and God only gives eternal life to those who obey his commands. Hebrews 5:8, 9, Matthew 5:19, 20, 2. Cor. 5:15, Philip. 1:29, more.

They're expected to spend five hours per week doing this, and while it's not compulsory, it's clearly expected that all members follow this guideline.

This behavior would seem to contradict the Bible's view on faith vs. works.

Jehovah's Witnesses are not the only belief system to go out and evangelize, (in fact, I've do it myself), but they're the only ones who somehow believe that Christ's teaching to make new disciples somehow meant that it had to be done door to door, and they're the only system of belief to enforce compliance with engaging in this task.

You can either listen or not. It is your right. For the person who says that we are not very successful (JBT), we have preached God's Kingdom in the entire world. Few people have been missed by our message. Either they have had direct contact with us or have heard of us. Matthew 24:14 says this message must be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations, then the end will come. We have reached the majority of the population. We have distributed the Bible in hundreds of languages. Our literature that tells all about God's Kingdom is published in over 400 languages.
