How long has there been bible study?

Direct Bible study is a relatively recent thing. Keep in mind that the Catholic Church discouraged reading the original scriptures. Up until the Doctorate level of education, Priests were taught using Peter Lombard's Book of Sentences. The church believed that the scriptures were too difficult for the average person or priest to understand.

The Vulgate, the first translation of the bible into Latin, wasn't completed until at least 400 years after the life of Christ. Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German in 1522!

Also, very few people could read. Before 1522, in order to read the Bible, you would have to be able to read either Latin, or ancient Hebrew AND Greek in order to read the Bible.

While just about anyone can find the Bible in their native language today, that would be the exception rather than the rule for most of Christian history.

How long has there been bible study?
Moses gave the first known Bible Study.

Exodus 24:7

Then Moses took the Book of the Covenant and read in the hearing of the people. And they said, “All that the LORD has said we will do, and be obedient.”

Reply:This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. --Joshua 1:8

But [Blessed is the man] his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. --Psalm 1:2
