How is a JW Bible study conducted?

My family and I are "in between" religions at the moment, and I have been reading a lot on the official JW website for quite awhile now. I have been tempted to click on the "request a Bible study" option many times, but I would first like to know exactly what to expect.

After I make the request, will someone just show up? Will they call first to see what time would be best? Will they, upon learning I am a stay-at-home mom, send someone who would likely better relate (like another mom who would understand my needing to attend to one of the kids should they need me during the study?) Or, should I try to schedule a time when I can have a sitter (which would really limit when I could and couldn't have a study).

I guess I am just nervous : / I am usually shy and reserved, so inviting a stranger in to my home to talk and learn about important beliefs is kind of intimidating.

Thanks :)

How is a JW Bible study conducted?
First, they will note your address and will search for the local congregation in your area. The body of elders that preside over the congregation will get in touch, or will ask a member of the congregation to call on you to meet with you (or just first contact you by phone) and discuss how the Bible study is conducted.

What you should know is that you are not locked into anything. The study can be held on any particular day and time of your choosing and can be conducted for any length of time that is acceptable to you. Typically, to start, the book "What Does the Bible Really Teach?" along with the Bible itself are used to study with one interested in the Bible. Different Bible topics are covered in the book such as "Why Does God Permit Wickedness?", "What Happens to the Dead?", and so on. ALL of the material presented is simply information used to aid you in your understanding of what is already included in the Bible. The Bible is always the ultimate source of truth and information.

Typically, the study is progressive through the book, chapter by chapter. A chapter will usually consist from anywhere from 15-20 paragraphs and can either be covered in one sitting or broken into multiple studies. The information in each paragraph contains references back to the Bible, to show you that the information is fully supported and originated in it. There are questions at the bottom of the page that correspond to the paragraph covered, and there are review questions at the end of each chapter so that you may review the information that was covered to see if you grasp and understand the material.

There is nothing to be worried or nervous about, nobody is going to judge you or pressure you.
Reply:there is nothing to be nervous about, but that they don't teach out of the Holy Bible..they don't celebrate their birthdates, and Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, be careful and don't let anybody get you twisted about who the true and LIVING GOD is!!!!!!!!! they come to my door, i talk with them, but they leave confused...they are very kind and no they don't mind if you have children...
Reply:I all depends on what you are interested in studying. they have alot of their own literature that they study; you won't necessarily just read the bible. but if you want to just read the bible i am sure you could do that do.

jw's in general are very very nice people. It is no longer the religion for me but i would encourage you to try it. i am sure you will enjoy studying with a jw.
Reply:you can also look in the yellow pages under Jehovah's witnesses or kingdom halls. they can help get a study going with a couple of sisters in your area. they will accommodate to you schedule. they will respect your needs. the study itself will last about hour sometimes even shorter. it really depends on you. i hope you find, what you are looking for. you mostly be using the knowledge book and your bible.
Reply:i wanna add a different option

add dots before and after "watchtower"
Reply:well its really up to you. when ever a jw goes to your house and offers you a magazine, just ask them. you won't be haggled or anything. you just tell them when you are available and how long you can study for. i encourage you start one
Reply:The study usually consists of reading the book "What does the Bible Really Teach"

This is a bible study aid, that doesn't replace the bible, but helps you to understand what the bible teaches.

This publication breaks down the basic teachings by subjects.

Who is God, Who is Jesus, what is the hope for the dead?, etc

The most common form of study is to read a paragraph, look up the reference scriptures and discuss the paragraph before going to the next paragraph.

There are no "tests", and what you do with the information is totally up to you.

Those who have attended semiars from the various churches have commented that they have learned more studying 6 months with JW's, than they did in the 4 years at their college.

You will not need a sitter for your child, and if you decide to attend a meeting you and your child will be warmly welcomed.

My agreeing to study the bible was the best decision I've ever made, next to dedicating my life to Jehovah God, thru his Son, Jesus.

Reply:They will initially just send someone to meet you briefly, then you can talk to them about this. Once you've clicked on the button it's not like you've signed a contract, it just means that someone in the local congregation will be asked to call, and they probably won't try to have a Bible study on the initial call, just arrange a time.

Since you're a woman, they'll certainly arrange for either a woman or a married couple to conduct the study. And if you ask for the study to be conducted by another mother, they'll probably be happy to arrange that. And if you need it at a certain time, they'll try to arrange that too, but they won't mind the child being in the house. And while someone mentioned an hour a week, and that is traditional and works quite well, it can be made shorter or longer - it just depends what is convenient. And indeed, it doesn't have to be at your house, if you're uncomfortable with that - that's just what's easiest for most people. They'll be there to help - don't be afraid to say how you feel. And remember, many Jehovah's Witnesses are very shy and reserved too!
