Can anyone recommend a book that will help me to study the Bible from a historical perspective, rather than a religious perspective? What I want is something that explains how the Bible came to be what it is to day, including various translations, role of chuch politics. Also, I want to better understand what the various stories meant in the context of the time period in which they were written.
Book recommendation to study Bible from historical perspective?

Its just a simple amazon search.

Reply:The best book I can think of off the top of my head would be "Sophie's World"
It is actually a history of philosophy set in a parable.
However, it does talk about the origins of Catholicism.
I have studied what you are looking for in depth and have contemplated creating a book such as you seek. I have yet to do it though, and I am not aware of any single book that has done this in a non-biased, non-religious perspective.
I would be happy to answer any questions you have via email. Writing such a book is quite daunting when you do not have a research staff at your disposal, that is the main reason I have not started mine. It is one thing to have knowledge of a thing and another entirely to dig up all your reference points for a proper bibliography.
Reply:The Bible
Reply:Walking the Bible. I haven't read it but started to read it because it sounded like a historical perspective on it.
Reply:you can just read the bible setting you mind on a historical point of view, rather than a religious one, "the best way to judge a book is reading it".
